Default O2 Question of the Day

Patient is set up 2/2009 Nocturnal, Doctor D/C'd the O2 in 10/2009. Patient is put back on O2 out of hospital Continuous with Portable 7/2010 same DX COPD. Since it never had a recert done on it the first time how do you do the CMN and Bill the Oxygen? BIS? Recert on CMN? First time I have run into this situation.

If you can get documentation of the D/C showing that the patient no longer needed the oxygen, then you have a case for break in need and would do a new CMN as initial.

Any O2 break in service of more than 60 days plus remaining rental days in pickup month, requires a new initial cmn.

If the doctor DC'd the patient then it is a break in need. If the reason for the break in billing cannot be documented then it is a break in service. Be sure to add narrative on the claim stating which scenario this is. Also it is helpful for break in need to describe the reason for the break in need. I have a fullproof one, no longer hypoxic. No matter the reason it all boils down to the patient being no longer hypoxic.
