I have a pt that receives drain bags A4357, eakin seal A4385, skin barriers A4407, urostomy pouch's A4432, nosting barrier film wipe A5120, and adhesive remover A4456. According to Medicare's LCD and article there are only 8 diagnosis codes that cover these items which are mainly ileostomy, colostomy, or artificial urinary track opening - this pat had cancer of the bladder and his whole bladder was removed which to me would justify drain bags and what not. Does anyone else have any cases like this or know of a way around the set ICD 9 codes?? Any information would be very helpful! Thank you!!!

I don't think there is really a way around that.. it would probably have to go through billing and then submitted to redetermination with all the medical douments showing that his condition does require the supplies. You could probably call Medicare customer service also.

Thanks for the advice! I did call Medicare already and they told me the same thing but I have had some bad experiences with Medicare not always giving the correct answer or getting several different answers! Thanks again!
