Default Diabetic Supplies

Well, I went to a VGM seminar and was told not to use the KX mod when billing diabetic supplies becuase the KS and KL take the place of the KX. I continued using the KX anyway and eventually received a denial for wrong modifier used. I called Medicare and they said it was because of the KX mod. So I billed without it and a couple of those were paid and now.... denied again. Called Medicare again and spoke to a lady who would not answer my question becuase it was telling me how to bill, which makes sense. I just dont like 2 different answers from the same company. Then she preceded to ask my If I have read the LC or active articles which I have and I can not find anything specific about the mods for test stips and lancets. Any information would be greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks so much!!

Kass- what region are you in? Because I checked the region A website and the KX modifier is still on the LCD. Could it be denying for date span?

KX indicates insulin dependent
KS is non-insulin dependent

(These modifiers determine utilization e.g. how many strips should be allowed)

KL indicates the items were shipped to the patient's home using UPS, Fed Ex, USPS or some other courier)

You will never use KS and KX on the same claim, and KL is only used when it reflects the mode of delivery.

DMEPOS consultant Andrea Stark is having a webinar on diabetic supply documentation on 02/03/11 at 2pm EST.

If you have any questions regarding diabetic supply documentation or billing, I suggest you go. There will be plenty of times for questions at the end, and you can rest assured that the answers are going to be accurate!

For more information, see: MiraVista.

FYI, there is a fee to attend.
