For capped rental items billed on or after 01/01/2006, Medicare will reimburse 13 rental months. Once 13 rental months have been paid, the equipment becomes purchased to the beneficiary and no additional billing will be allowed. Therefore, maintenance and service can no longer be billed for patient owned equipment. Once the equipment becomes purchased to the beneficiary, repairs may be billed, but routine maintenance charges are allowed. Please feel free to contact me with additional questions regarding capped rental billing.
