The "One-Time Mailing of Solicitation Letter to all physicians..." does not state anywhere that they need to enroll by July. It says "as soon as possible." The only mention of a date: "The carriers and A/B MACs are expected to process your enrollment applicaiton within 60 days as long as you submit your enrollment application before September 1, 2010."
I know that it's a rhetorical question, but if they really wanted to get physicians to register with PECOS why didn't the failure to register impact their cash flow and not ours???
What, and have the AMA all over them? No way. I, and every other rational
thinker, agree with you. But simply stated - because they can and because
we are an easy target.
How is everyone contacting non-enrolled doctors? By phone, letter, or both? If by letter, are you using the CMS letter or your own? And most importantly, are you getting any results?
All of the above. we have developed our own letter and have contacted the clinics directly. We actually have gotten some results especially when we work with the business office of the clinic. We just updated our list of Doctors not in PECOS and are going to focus on the "current" physicians who are placing orders.
The official letter from CMS to the docs that I saw made no mention of the new July 6 deadline. It just said get enrolled as soon as possible. Pretty much the same thing the docs have been hearing since 2003. So it's definitely on the HME provider to notify the doctors that the deadline is next week.
Of course, even if the docs fill out the 29 page form to get enrolled in PECOS in the next week, these forms usually take months to process. Did you know that the National Association for Home Care & Hospice is finding that 24% to 40% of ordering physicians are not PECOS enrolled?
Where do I go to read that the dealine for Pecos is now 7/6/2010?
I'm still thoroughly confused about the true Pecos deadline date. I have
received so many conflicting info. And when I just called Noridian
(Jurisdiction D), the CSR had no idea what I was talking about when I
mentioned the July 6 deadline. She said the only info she has is a deadline
of Jan 2011.

The DME MACs are as much in the dark about what the July 6 deadline means as everyone else is. I just attended a CIGNA ATC yesterday, where they stated that they are aware of the July enrollment deadline, but that until they receive additional direction or clarification from CMS, they as a DME MAC are holding to January 3, 2011 as the start date for rejections.
It's important to note that while the rejection date hasn't "officially" changed, there is the posibility that it could. Also, CMS always reserves the right to go back and retroactively edit claims to the July 6, 2010 deadline. This means that claims submitted after July 6 for which the physician is not enrolled in PECOS could become a potential liability down the road.
However, CIGNA also stated that they have also not heard any word on whether or not CMS plans to retroactively edit claims back to this date once rejections begin. They could, or they could not.
So in a nutshell, the January date still stands for rejections (for now), but this could be accelerated, and the July date could also prove costly if claims are audited retroactively.
We won't really have a solid idea of what is going to happen until after CMS responds to comments on their iterim final rule (the comment period closes on July 6). As of now, they are staying pretty tight lipped.
