Default PAP Devices - RT Requirements

Can anyone tell me what, if any, requirements exist with regards to the setup and usage of PAP Devices (CPAP, BIPAP, humidifier, supplies) and respiratory therapists (RTs)? Are there any federal or state laws that require RTs to set up and perform pressure changes on PAP devices?

Yes, Each state has their own laws regarding this. Most states require that PAP devices be set up by RT's. (Also mask fitting)

What about pressure changes - do most states require that RT's perform pressure changes? How do you guys handle pressure changes - do you require the patient make an appointment with your RT and come into the office? Or do you go to them at home?
Thanks for your help!!

I am in Tennessee. Yes, our state requires RT's also do the pressure changes. In cases where Medicare is the primary and the item hasn't capped, we send the RT into the home. (Same for Commercial & Medicaid) You could offer the option for the patient to come in. Sometimes they prefer to make the appointment and just come by the office. A word of caution, Tennessee is very aware of the PAP requirements and consider the Owner practicing Respiratory Therapy without a license if you direct your delivery staff to do anything other that teach routine maintenance on PAP devices. Be sure to check with your states Board of Licensure for Respiratory Therapy for more info.

Michigan does NOT require it. In fact, a few years ago they finally began licensing RTs but if you don't work under a medical director you can't become licensed even if you have a degree so in essense my husband lost his degree with that! CRAZY huh!
